Students in Year 11 were given a valuable insight into university life with a visit to Essex University in Colchester today. The trip provided a firsthand experience of what it would be like to study at a higher education institution, giving students a glimpse of both the academic and social sides of university life.
The day began with a campus tour, during which students discovered the university’s wide array of amenities, making it feel like a mini town. From a launderette to a supermarket and a variety of cafes, the campus is well-equipped to meet the needs of its students. The tour gave students a clear understanding of how the campus offers more than just academic learning but also the essential support for day-to-day life.
After the tour, students attended a talk about what universities offer, including the diverse range of courses available and advice on how to choose the right course. The talk aimed to help students better understand the different pathways they could take in higher education, encouraging them to think carefully about their future academic goals.
The highlight of the visit was a university-level lecture on criminology, focusing on current research being conducted by a PhD student. The lecture explored the topic of gangs, examining why people become involved with them. This provided students with an engaging insight into the world of academic research and a deeper understanding of complex social issues.
Overall, the visit to Essex University was an invaluable experience for the Year 11 students. It not only gave them a clearer picture of university life but also inspired them to think about the many opportunities available at degree level. The day was an exciting step forward in their journey toward higher education.
