On Wednesday 27 March 2019, a practitioner from the Royal Shakespeare Company visited the school to work with two groups of Year 11 students.
Over the course of a two-hour workshop, a total of 31 students were guided through a variety of rehearsal-room techniques to explore key moments in Macbeth. The aim was to build a greater appreciation of the world of the play by exploring Shakespeare's rhythm and language.
The activities should also be a useful preparation for the English Literature GCSE exam in May.

About the RSC Associate Schools Programme
Earlier this year, Notley High School & Braintree Sixth joined a ground-breaking new programme to work with the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) and other schools in the region to bring Shakespeare’s work to life. The Associate Schools programme is the RSC’s national partnership project run by regional theatre companies and schools, in partnership with the RSC.
The programme is built around local partnerships that consist of a Lead Associate School and theatre partner who recruit a number of Associate Schools. The initial two-year programme of work involves teachers, students and the wider community.
The fundamental ambition of the Associate Schools programme is to transform experiences of Shakespeare and live theatre for young people. Alongside continuing professional development and learning opportunities for teachers, the programme includes unique access to the work and resources of the RSC.
So far, teachers have already attended training days and are beginning to implement rehearsal room techniques in class. Some of our students have seen a live screening of Romeo and Juliet and taken part in RSC workshops and a practitioner and actor from the RSC has visited the school to work with Year 11 students.
In addition to this, our drama club is currently working on their own production of Romeo and Juliet and a section of this will be performed at The New Wolsey Theatre in Ipswich in July.
