On Thursday, we were lucky to be able to host the Science Award Presentation in conjunction with the John Ray Trust and Trinity College, Cambridge.

The Trust encourages local people to study Science and to aspire to study at top universities. The Science Prize is awarded to a third year Natural Science student at Cambridge University who has to present a talk to an interested, but non-expert, audience.

The talk on sharks was delivered to our Triple Scientists in Year 10 and 11 and all of our A level scientists. Amongst the information the students learnt was that sharks create  a vortex to enable them to suck fish into their mouths and that sharks’ scales are made of the same material as teeth, which means that the amount of carbon dioxide in our oceans is actually slowly dissolving the sharks.

Some of the students commented that they learnt a lot and felt inspired to apply to Cambridge University. Maybe it will be one of our scientists receiving this award in the future!
