At 7.30pm on Wednesday 12th December the Music Department held their annual Christmas Concert in the Braintree Arts Theatre.

The Concert was popular as usual with the theatre almost filled to capacity. The audience were entertained with a wide variety of musical items from the large number of different ensembles and groups which rehearse in the school every week. Rev Mason opened and closed the concert with prayers which helped everyone focus on the meaning and message of the festive season. The readings read by students further helped us all to reflect on the Christmas season from a number of different perspectives.

The Wind Band opened and closed the concert playing as usual to a very high standard. Their other contributions were well received by the audience. The Jazz Band performed a number of items again to a high standard. Both bands demonstrated a good sense of ensemble and sensitive interpretation of the music.

The Choir enjoyed singing three songs, a lot of students asking when we are next performing. Smaller groups included the flute group, boys vocal group, Year 8 girls vocal ensemble and three Year 7 groups performing songs which they had composed in class as part of the Year 7 Christmas Song Competition.

Amy Lazell sang Rutter’s ‘Carol of the Children’ with feeling and expression.

All the students performed confidently and entertained the audience with a variety of music which really brought home the Christmas message. Following the concert refreshments and mince pies were served in Café 6.

Thanks go to Mrs Hanna, Mrs Robb and Mr Harris for working with the students to prepare the musical items. Rev Mason for opening and closing the concert. Miss Smith for rehearsing the readers. Mrs McGibney and her staff for theatre management and ticket sales. Mrs Thurman and her staff for providing the refreshments and Mrs Goodman for producing the programme.

Chris Harris, Deputy Head of Music
