Headteacher's Update 24 October 2024
The end of our first half term is now upon us and I would like to thank students, colleagues, and parent/carers for their energy and commitment to our school community and the changes that we are making. Much has been achieved since the start of term and I have been very pleased to see how most students have responded to our new rewards system – HEART points – and the step change around uniform, politeness, and kindness. HEART certificates have been awarded this week in year group assemblies.
This week Year 11 students have attended a Jekyll and Hyde Theatre Production, and many have attended additional in-school Science and Maths interventions with PET XI. Tutor time has focused on revision skills and revision timetables ahead of tonight’s Year 11 Parents’ Evening and the mock examinations which start the second week back after half term. GCSE Music and Food Technology students have also completed components of the final GCSE examination – well done to all!
Year 13 students have had group sessions with an external company, Elevate, focused on revision techniques and time management. Students applying to Oxford and Cambridge have now submitted their UCAS qualifications and many students are undertaking an additional Extended Project qualification (EPQ) to add further breadth to their A level and BTEC Options. I had the privilege of working with one Year 13 student on his EPQ project earlier in the week and it truly is a great course.
Yesterday we ran two charity events including a Netball match and pumpkin throwing. Money raised with be given to Essex Air Ambulance. It was very good to see the enthusiasm from both staff and students!
A reminder of our Remembrance Poetry Competition that closes today:
As well as a reminder of the variety of extra-curricular clubs running during lunchtimes.
Finally, a reminder that Monday 4th November is a staff training day and a non-pupil day. All students should return to school on Tuesday 5th November.
Wishing everyone a safe and enjoyable half term.
Mr M Barrow, Headteacher
