On 11 June 2025, all Year 9 students had the exciting opportunity to visit the University of Essex for a firsthand look at what life is like as a university student. The trip was both educational and inspiring, giving students a glimpse into their potential futures.

The day began with a warm welcome from university staff, followed by interactive taster sessions in two academic areas: Media and Film Studies and Linguistics.

As part of the visit, students also had discussions around key university terminology. They learned the meaning of words such as "undergraduate," "lectures," "seminars," and "campus," and talked about the differences between university degrees and degree apprenticeships. Many were surprised to learn that degree apprenticeships allow you to earn a salary while working towards a degree, combining practical experience with academic study.

A highlight of the day was a guided tour of the university’s campus. Students saw the library, lecture halls, student accommodation, and social areas, giving them a real feel for the environment. Many were excited by the idea of studying in such a vibrant and independent setting.

The visit helped students understand that higher education is more accessible than they may have thought. It sparked curiosity and ambition among many Year 9s, who left the campus feeling inspired and better informed about their future options.

Overall, it was a valuable and enjoyable day, planting the seeds for future aspirations in higher education.
